Thomas Tuchel says Kai Havertz needs to improve his stats when it comes down to goals and assists in order to get back to his best level.

The Chelsea attacker ended last season on a high by scoring the winning goal in their Champions League triumph over Manchester City.

He bagged twice in the summer at the European Championships with Germany before enjoying a strong pre-season under Tuchel.

But Havertz is yet to assist in the league this season and has scored just once, with his only goal coming in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool in August.

Tuchel says those stats need to improve and is backing the 22-year-old to regain his form.

‘That’s a fact [he’s not at the level of last season],’ Tuchel said.

‘He does everything to reach his level again and we will do everything to help him. He is an important player for our squad and it will be like this at the moment.

‘He had many games to start with, he started strong in the season. He was very strong in pre-season.

‘The story has not changed, but he lacks, as simple as that, the statistics of decisive things, of goals and assists and he needs to fight his way back into the team.

‘And he gets minutes and this can happen anytime. We trust in him and we believe in him and the rest has to come from him and he’s willing to do so.

‘He’s in good shape and a good mental state. He knows what he’s fighting for and that’s the situation right now.’

Havertz will be hoping for an opportunity to shine in tomorrow’s Champions League clash with Malmo but faces tough competition with the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek recently handed a chance to impress.

Tuchel confirmed the only injury concerns they currently have are with Christian Pulisic, who is suffering with an ankle problem.
