Chelsea hailed Ross Barkley after the midfielder posted an impressive time of 16 minutes and 11 seconds for his 5k run – but all is not as it seems.

Several Premier League players have already posted their best 5k run times and many are comfortably under the 20-minute mark.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has recorded the best time so far, as it took him just 16 minutes to complete his run.

But Barkley didn’t appear to be too far behind the Manchester United star as he recorded a time of 16 minutes and 11 seconds.

However, on closer inspection, it appears Barkley didn’t run a 5k flat out.

Instead, the Chelsea midfielder appeared to be doing sprint training, and his high average pace was recorded following a series of shuttle runs.

The biggest giveaway is on Barkley’s analysis page on Strava, as his total elapsed time for his run was an hour and five minutes.

Barkley has struggled with injuries this season and the Chelsea midfielder even admitted earlier this year that he has been forced to train using only his left foot.

‘I had fine chips on two parts of my bone in my foot so it was really painful,’ he said.

‘I just had to bide my time and keep working hard.

‘I couldn’t really kick the ball with my right foot so I was training with my left. But now I feel good and I am ready to get back in the side.’
